Year 6 conference experience

Last Tuesday, all the year 6s from JSK and JSD got together and did lots of activities. It was called Lead Yourself to the Future Day. That day, I experienced lots of thing like good teamwork and stretching myself out of my comfort zone. We had lots of different groups and I was in the yellow one. I believe all the year 6s had a great experience.

We did many fun activities on Tuesday like the newspaper tower challenge, the cup stacking challenge and the planking challenge which is a challenge that which group cold plank for the longest wins. This activity was really fun and tiring but it taught us to persevere and have good teamwork. The planking challenge also taught us to use smart strategies to win and somehow stay the longest. Unfortunately, our group didn’t win but we all get to have icy poles which is good. For the other two challenges, also didn’t win because our group just couldn’t get the strategy right. We were using the dumbest way. It was just like trial and error. Even though our yellow group didn’t win, we still had lots of fun  and taught me lots of lessons. I believe I would remember this day forever.

Favourite book chat of the year.

My favourite book chat book this year is Con-Nerd by Oliver Phommavanh. I loved this book because it was really funny and easy to understand. It had a appropriate length. It was a about a boy called Conner because he was a nerd and their parents where Thai. Conner’s dad died so his mum wants him to work hard and be a doctor when he grow up but in Conner’s mind, he wants to  be a cartoonist when he grows up. Conner gets bullied by the cool kidz because he was really smart and not really sporty. Then the cool kidz makes Conner do their homework and as a reward to teach Conner to be Cool and sporty. And then, Conner became part of the C-Gang with the cool kidz and got a scholarship to a selective high school.

I recommend this book to kids from 8 years old to 11 years old because the words aren’t too hard and really easy to understand. They will also like this book because it is part of the humour section and this book is extremely funny.

Holidays my family celebrate🎉 (student blogging challenge)

In my family, we celebrate many holidays including Christmas, Easter 🐣 Halloween 👻  and most importantly CHINESE NEW YEAR! But in this blog I’m only going to tell you 1 of them. We celebrate Chinese New Year because I am Chinese. In Chinese New Year 🧧, we do many things and one of the thing people do is dragon dancing. We do this to scare away the evil.

In Chinese New Year, we also light up up red lanterns because the evil dragon is scared of the colour red so we could have good luck.

In Chinese New Year, we also have a big feast with family and friends. We usually eat fish 🐠. We also dress in orange or red to keep bad lick away.

Chinese people love the colour red, red is the symbol of energy, happiness and good luck. Sending red envelopes is a way to send good wishes and luck (as well as money). Actually, the significance of red envelopes is the red paper, not the money inside.

That is about it about Chinese New Year. What holidays do you celebrate?

Term 3 gold rush Reflection

This term the year 5’s had camp at Sovereign Hill and in this blog post, I am going to tell you what I did and tell you some interesting facts.

Life in the 1800’s

Life in the 1800’s was really hard for some people because there was a gold rush and everyone was digging for gold and had really bad housing. Because of the gold rush, everyone from all countries came to Australia, Ballarat to dig for gold. Some people had really bad food and water. There are also little children at the gold rush and 1/4 of children below 5 years old died because of the diseases in the food at the gold rush.

1800’s businesses

But, not everyone at the gold rush were miners, there are also shops for the miners. One of the main shops was the Blacksmith. That is where you bought  your tools to dig for gold. The Apothecary was also really important because that’s where you sold medicines to cure diseases. The doctors were there too but back then, the doctors were pretty useless.

Eureka Stokade

At December 3rd 1854 the Eureka Stockade happened. The gold miners and the policeman had a fight about the gold license that the miners needed to pay to gold mine. Each license costed 30 shillings which was a lot of money back then. They wanted their rights, liberty and freedom so they wanted a war. The miners built a wooden wall to protect themselves from the police man. The fight lasted no longer than 20 minutes and 25 mens died in the war.

Famous Important Figures

In the 1850’s there were several important figures. One that stands out is called Peter Lalor who changed life for all the miners. He gave the right to let the miners vote. On December the 3rd, Peter Lalor gathered all the miners and burnt their gold mining license. They raised the flag of the Southern Cross and Peter Lalor said, “ We swear by the Southern Cross to fight for our rights and liberty.” He was also the one who started the Eureka Stockade .

PLA’s

Some plan I showed while making the diorama is IMAGINATION,COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, RESILIENCE. I show imagination by imagining how the diorama looks and design with my hardworking partner, Sylvie.      I showed communication by talking to Sylvie and discussing about the diorama. I also used collaboration because when Sylvie and I were building the diorama, we needed to collaborate. I showed resilience in the diorama project because at the start, Sylvie and I were a bit behind. Sylvie and I tried and tried and the diorama came out amazing and better looking than most ones.

Challenges Faced

Some challenges Sylvie and I faced was when we were a bit behind in the diorama. We were too busy making it perfect so we wasted lots of time. When we just finished our structure, most people finished their diorama already. One day, we decided to concentrate and catch up. The next two days, I wasn’t at school because I was very, very sick. But luckily, the wonderful Sylvie took the diorama home and worked on it. When I came back on Monday, the diorama was looking fantastic!

Overall Reflection

I had lots of fun this term with the gold rush unit building the diorama with Sylvie and going to Sovereign Hill. It was a great experience and I learnt the life in the 1800s and how some people suffered on the the goldfields. The diorama project was also a really fun challenge that made me improve lots of PLAs including COLLABORATION and COMMUNICATION. Overall, this term was a really fun and adventurous term.

Information books

In term 3, we have been doing a review on sone books we read. We needed to look at the information, illustration and the layout of the book. These book was part of the shortlist of the CBCA Book Week Awards. These non fiction books include: Make Believe, Our Birds, Waves, Sorry Day, Bouncing Back and happiness box. My favourite book was the Happiness Box because it was based on a true story and it has really good and realistic illustrations. I also liked the story about the war. But, as much as I loved this book. It still didn’t get first place, it got honourable mention. The winning book for Carey was Make Believe. This book had some amazing optical illusions and they were all illustrated. It has wonderful drawings but I didn’t like the information. It just didn’t hook me in the book. I also loved some other books including bouncing back. This book did not get any awards but I still loved this book because I love animals. The winning book was Sorry Day, which is actually my least favourite one. It had alright drawing but I just didn’t like it. Anyway, I had a great time reading and judging these book. What are your Favourite books?

Year 5 camp

Year 5 camp

This year, the year 5s went to camp at sovereign hill. It was really fun.

School

One thing that I never knew before was how to gold pan. It was really fun. You first need to let the gold sink to the bottom and then empty the pan with water and then Eureka! I also learnt how to write fancy 1800s handwriting. The three main things was shape, size and slope. Sadly, I wasn’t really good at it but I still had lots of fun.

In the schools program at first, I felt a bit nervous because I didn’t really know what was going to happen. On the second day, I felt really comfortable at school because I know what is going to happen and how it’s going to happen. At the end of the

school program.

M.A.D.E

The museum was really fun, we learnt about the Eureka Stokade and people that made a change in the 1800s. We also did lots of fun activities. We made flags by ourselves, had a look at the Eureka Flag and more!

Sound and Light Show

We basically learnt about the Eureka Stokade in a movie way. We watched a 3D movie about how gold was formed. Overall it was a really fun camp. 🙂

Mark Wilson Festival

  1. My favourite part of the festival was drawing the pictures with Mark Wilson because he could teach me to get better at drawing with simple techniques. I also really enjoyed the football activity because it is fun and it could also improve your marking skills.
  2. I learnt that in the army, soldiers get really tired so they get thirsty and apparently now, you could get this weird pipe that could get water in your mouth with a swing of a hand. I also learnt to draw a soldier from Mark Wilson step by step.

Whats your favourite Mark Wilson book and why?
